Patient story

Nationally recognized MS care

The UW Medicine MS Center has been recognized as a Partner in MS Care since 2014 and recently awarded the Excellence in Care Award by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. This designation is given to healthcare providers with proven expertise and experience in treating patients with MS. Partners in MS Care have a history of connecting patients to information, resources and support that help them live their best lives with MS.

Getting care for MS

Consultation and diagnosis

The specialists at UW Medicine use numerous tests to confirm or rule out MS. These include blood tests, lumbar punctures (spinal taps) and MRI scans. An MRI scan may help predict your risk of developing MS.

Treatment

At UW Medicine, you have access to medications proven to reduce inflammation, the frequency and severity of relapses and the number of new brain lesions. When combined with other therapies, such as rehabilitation, these treatments may also reduce brain atrophy (shrinking) and slow the progression of your symptoms.

Ongoing support

In addition to our MS-trained neurologists, our team at UW Medicine helps you cope with your diagnosis, improve your symptoms and function, manage stress and juggle your work and home life while living with MS.

Research

Since launching our MS program more than 40 years ago, UW Medicine has frequently received research funding from the National Institutes of Health and other federal and nonprofit agencies. All our patients have the opportunity to take part in research. Your participation lets you test new MS treatments that may improve symptoms, function and quality of life.
