It’s safe to say that a lot of people are excited about what’s to come on Severance Season 2, one of the best Apple TV+ original series. Created by Dan Erickson and directed by Ben Stiller and Aoife McArdle, the first season of the mind-bending (and genre-bending) workplace drama about the employees of a mysterious company, captured the hearts, minds, and imaginations of viewers back in 2022, and in not that much time, we’ll be going back to the Lumon Corporation.

So, when will we pick up from the wild Severance Season 1 finale, who’ll be joining Adam Scott’s Mark Scout and Britt Lower’s Helly Riggs on the payroll, and what can we expect to see unfold when one of the most anticipated upcoming Apple TV+ shows returns? Well, funny you should ask, as we’re about to break down everything we know about Severance Season 2, including its premiere date, cast, and what its cast and creative team have said about it.

That means that everyone with an Apple TV+ subscription can go back into the wild and hard-to-explain world of Lumon industries not long after the start of the new year and hopefully have all those lingering questions answered.

Apple TV+ will surely be one of the best streaming services throughout the early part of 2025, as the platform has announced that Severance Season 2 will consist of 10 episodes. In the big announcement, Apple also revealed that the season will be released weekly, meaning you’ll get to dive into a new chapter of the series and attempt to uncover its mysteries every Friday through March 21, 2025.

In July 2024, Apple gave everyone a look at what’s to come with the Severance Season 2 sneak peek, which revealed not only the premiere date but also a glimpse at members of the cast, both old and new (more on them later).

Though only offering flashes of images of the Lumon Corporation and its employees, the 40-second announcement video certainly got everyone’s attention and took a “less is more” approach to revealing what we can expect moving forward. That said, expect to see a full trailer at some point in the next few months, especially as the clock starts to tick down until the show’s return.

What Will Severance Season 2 Be About?

Severance Season 2: Premiere Date, Cast And Other Things We Know About The New Season (14)

Throughout Severance Season 1, viewers spent a considerable amount of time with the office side of the various Lumon employees, but only Adam Scott’s Mark Scout was followed a great deal in the outside world. But according to remarks co-showrunner Dan Erickson made during a 2022 interview with Entertainment Weekly, Season 2 will show more of Mark’s coworkers outside of the mysterious building, which is something he sounded excited to explore:

I just can't wait, because these actors are all obviously so good. And being able to take what Adam did in the first season — with the differentiation between his innie and outie, and how they feel like the same person but with this vastly different lived experience — seeing the other three characters' version of that dichotomy is, I think, the most exciting part. In Season 2, we're really going to expand and get into all of that. But then there'll be plenty of office stuff too. There may even be another melon bar.

Erickson also explained that each of these characters has their own reasons for undergoing the procedure that separated their work consciousness from their outside self, and that they are all at “some stage of a healing process.”

Severance Season 2 Will Be Delving Into The Unknown

As we saw time and time again throughout Severance Season 1, the hit Apple TV+ original series wasn’t afraid to take audiences to some wild, fantastical, and unexpected places, and it sounds like the sophomore effort won’t be any different. When discussing the show’s long-awaited return with Variety in September 2024, John Turturro made some comments that should have fans even more excited, especially when it comes to going “into the unknown,” as he put it:

I think it’ll be a really interesting second season. We are delving into the unknown that the audience is waiting for, and then doing it incrementally.

The “then doing it incrementally” aspect of the Big Lebowski cast member’s peek behind the curtain of Severance Season 2 is quite intriguing, and we can’t wait to see how Ben Stiller and company slowly turn up the heat from a simmer to a boil.

Production Wrapped In April 2024

Severance Season 2: Premiere Date, Cast And Other Things We Know About The New Season (16)

We won’t have to worry about any shooting delays impacting the Severance Season 2 premiere date as production on the show’s sophomore outing wrapped in April 2024. During a chat with People, star Adam Scott couldn't reveal much about the upcoming season, but he did confirm that the cast and crew had finished filming.

This news came a year-and-a-half after cameras started rolling on Severance Season 2 back in October 2022, as revealed in an Instagram post by Apple TV+ and Ben Stiller. But like countless other TV series, movies, and even light-night comedy shows, production was greatly affected by the SAG-AFTRA and WGA Writers Strike, which forced its producers to press pause in May 2023, according to Deadline. However, the shoot picked back up again later that month, according to the CBC, after the cast and crew were spotted filming in and around Newfoundland, Canada.

When discussing the extensive production schedule and various delays experienced by the cast and crew over the past two years during a September 2024 interview with Variety (the same as the John Turturro chat mentioned above), Stiller described it as an “interesting experience,” stating:

It’s been an interesting, trying time over the last few years to make things, on all levels for people. So to keep that focus on trying to make the best possible season, being aware that it’s taken a long time. I, like other people, get frustrated when things take a long time. I want to have the next season sooner. So I understand that feeling of the expectation.

Stiller would go on to say that he hopes the new season lives up to the expectations of fans who will have waited nearly three years for new episodes, adding:

It’s taken a long time. I hope it’s good. You know, people are just wanting something to live up to what they’ve experienced and have it hopefully not let them down. And so, I don’t know, All you all you can do is try to do what you think is good.

It’s understandable for Stiller to feel that way, but hopefully all the worry will be for naught and Severance Season 2 will be just as good or better than its first go back in 2022.

Patricia Arquette Has Said Fans Should Be Very Scared For What’s Coming Next

Severance Season 2: Premiere Date, Cast And Other Things We Know About The New Season (17)

We don’t yet know a lot about the story in Severance Season 2. However, Patricia Arquette, who plays the incredibly intense and mysterious Harmony Cobel, gave viewers a warning when hyping up the new season to Entertainment Tonight at the 28th Annual Critics Choice Awards in January 2023, saying:

Be scared, very scared. No, I think these guys have been working really hard, and come up with a lot of really creative things. They have a whole world in their minds. They just let us in, piece by piece, into what's going on, but I think it will be fun and beautiful, and Britt is amazing as always.

The Academy Award-winning actress didn’t offer up any concrete details about the show’s second chapter, explaining that she was being kept in the dark about the plan before she started filming her scenes.

There’s A Plan For The Series Beyond Season 2

Severance Season 2: Premiere Date, Cast And Other Things We Know About The New Season (18)

Though a third season has yet to be announced by Apple TV+ or anyone involved with the series, Dan Erickson has alluded to Severance going as many as six seasons to properly tell its story. When chatting with Esquire in April 2022, the show’s creator had this to say about the series’ future and “overall plan” for the future:

There's an overall plan for the show. I have an end point in mind, and I intentionally didn't plan it season by season, because I wanted it to be flexible enough that we could get there in two seasons or six seasons. I want to allow us to be surprised by where the show goes. There’s a sense of what Lumon is trying to do and the role that our main characters are going to play in that, and where it all will culminate. It's really exciting to think about taking the next step on that trip.

If Severance is given time to cook (just hopefully not as long as it’s been between Seasons 1 and 2) and properly lay out its vast story and assortment of Lumon employees, audiences could be in for one wild and mind-bending ride in the coming years.

Expect to hear much more about Severance Season 2 in the coming weeks as we iron out our theories about the show’s mysteries, including the story behind the goats. In the meantime, there are a ton of upcoming 2024 TV shows to look forward to while we wait.

Philip grew up in Louisiana (not New Orleans) before moving to St. Louis after graduating from Louisiana State University-Shreveport. When he's not writing about movies or television, Philip can be found being chased by his three kids, telling his dogs to stop barking at the mailman, or chatting about professional wrestling to his wife. Writing gigs with school newspapers, multiple daily newspapers, and other varied job experiences led him to this point where he actually gets to write about movies, shows, wrestling, and documentaries (which is a huge win in his eyes). If the stars properly align, he will talk about For Love Of The Game being the best baseball movie of all time.
